How to Care for a Freshly Done Tattoo: Tips and Recommendations

A tattoo is a form of body art that requires special care to ensure proper healing and maintain the vibrant appearance over time. If you've decided to get a new tattoo, it's important to follow some care guidelines to ensure proper healing and avoid potential complications. In this blog post, we'll provide you with tips and recommendations on how to care for a freshly done tattoo.

  1. Proper cleaning: After your tattoo is finished, your tattoo artist will clean it and cover it with a bandage or plastic wrap. Follow your tattoo artist's instructions on how long you should keep it covered. Once that time has passed, carefully remove the bandage and gently wash the tattoo with warm water and a mild soap, without rubbing too hard. Make sure your hands are clean before touching the tattoo.

  2. Adequate moisturization: After washing the tattoo, apply a thin layer of ointment or cream recommended by your tattoo artist. Make sure to use a fragrance-free and gentle cream that won't irritate the skin. Apply the cream several times a day to keep the tattoo moisturized and prevent it from drying out and cracking.

  3. Avoid scratching or picking scabs: During the healing process, it's normal for scabs to form on the tattoo. Never scratch or pick at them, as this can lead to poor healing and affect the final appearance of the tattoo. Let the scabs fall off naturally.

  4. Sun protection: Sun rays can damage the skin and fade tattoo colors. Avoid exposing the freshly done tattoo to direct sunlight and use sunscreen with a high protection factor, especially when the tattoo is exposed to the sun.

  5. Avoid stagnant water and activities that may damage the tattoo: During the healing stage, avoid immersing the tattoo in stagnant water, such as pools, hot tubs, or seawater. Also, avoid activities that may rub or irritate the tattoo, such as engaging in contact sports or wearing tight clothing over the tattooed area.

  6. Follow your tattoo artist's instructions: Each tattoo artist may have specific recommendations on how to care for the tattoo. Pay close attention to the instructions provided by your tattoo artist and follow their post-tattoo care guidance.

Remember that complete healing of a tattoo can take several weeks. During this time, maintain good hygiene, moisturization, and avoid activities that may damage the tattoo. If you have any concerns or notice signs of infection, such as excessive redness or swelling, severe pain, or discharge, consult your tattoo artist or a healthcare professional promptly.
